Key dates for the tax season ahead
RRSP contributions for a tax year can be made up to 60 days after the end of that year, around March 1. If you plan to contribute, bring every receipt, including those for contributions made early in the new year.
Employers must issue T4 slips and file the T4 Summary by the last day of February. If you're an employer in Strathcona County, our payroll service can help you meet that deadline.
Personal returns are due April 30, and any balance owing is due the same day. If you or your spouse or common-law partner carried on a business, the filing deadline is June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30. When a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day.
Late filing can be costly: the CRA's late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months, and interest is charged on unpaid balances. Filing on time matters even if you can't pay, and it keeps benefits like the Canada child benefit and GST/HST credit flowing.
